Adblock Plus is an open-source browser extension. Once installed, it uses default filter lists. Users can add exceptions and turn filtering off on chosen sites, for example to support publishers that rely on advertising.
The basic version is free. So-called “Acceptable Ads” may be permitted by default, and that setting can be changed. Some sites detect blockers or alter how adverts appear, so a filter will not always succeed.

How filtering works
As a page loads, the extension compares requests and elements against rules. If an address or element matches, it may be blocked or hidden. Filter lists are updated regularly.
No filter is perfect. Websites change their structure, adverts are embedded in new ways, and a useful element may occasionally vanish. Filtering can then be paused or an exception added.
